Scraping (IASTM)

Scraping (IASTM)

IASTM stands for Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation.

It involves the use of specialised tools to massage and manipulate the skin, fascia, and muscles.

Adopted and westernised from the ancient Chinese medicine Gua Sha. IASTM is a great technique to use when paired with other treatment modalities, especially deep tissue and sports massage.

IASTM can be useful in various ways:

1. Soft Tissue Mobilisation: It helps break down adhesions and scar tissue, promoting better movement and flexibility in soft tissues.

2. Pain Reduction: IASTM contributes to pain reduction by addressing trigger points and releasing tension in muscles and fascia.

3. Improved Circulation: The technique enhances blood flow to the treated area, aiding in the delivery of nutrients and the removal of waste products.

4. Enhanced Range of Motion: By targeting tight muscles and fascia, IASTM contributes to increased joint flexibility and range of motion.

5. Rehabilitation: It's commonly used in rehabilitation settings to accelerate recovery from injuries, surgeries, or chronic conditions.

6. Athletic Performance: Athletes may use IASTM as part of their training routine to prevent injuries, improve performance, and facilitate quicker recovery.

7. Myofascial Release: IASTM can assist in myofascial release, addressing restrictions in the connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles.

8. Localised Treatment: It allows for precise and targeted treatment of specific areas, making it suitable for addressing localised issues.
